Old Man of the Mountain Legacy Fund

The Old Man of the Mountain Legacy Fund was established to raise the funds necessary to implement the ideas generated by the Old Man of the Mountain Task Force after the fall of the Old Man in May 2003.

The initiatives of the Task Force include:

  • Profile viewing devices installed at Franconia State Park (completed).
  • Profile Lake Artist Pathway.
  • Traveling exhibits.
  • School curriculum.
  • Interpretive Center (including museum and visitor center).
  • Annual Profile Awards (given to an organization, individual and community that has worked to preserve, protect and promote the qualities associated with the Old Man).
    • Awards will be hosted May 3, 2006 at the Capitol Center for the Arts in Concord, NH.

GFWC-New Hampshire clubwomen, for more than 75 years have had a "love affair" with the Great Stone Face tracing back to 1928 when it took up the challenge to raise $100,000 in a few short months to finalize the purchase of Franconia Notch in cooperation with the Society for the Protection of NH Forests. They helped New Hampshire celebrate Old Man of the Mountain Day and spearheaded a grassroots effort by the school children of the Granite State where they had collectively raised $1,000 with contributions as small as a nickel.

During the 1984-1986 Administration of Ruth Brown of Conway, NH, GFWC volunteers worked tirelessly to raise funds to make possible an Old Man of the Mountain Museum in Franconia. At that time members sold cloisonne pins, the book "Saving the Great Stone Face" autographed by Niels Nielsen (official caretaker of the Old Man), fashion shows, teas and tours of the Governors Mansion and the Pierce Manse. Some ten years later the Museum became a reality with a contribution exceeding $20,000 by the clubwomen of New Hampshire.

And with the 2004-2006 administration theme of "What Was Old is New Again...Our Federation Legacy", GFWC New Hampshire club volunteers are once again integrally involved with perpetuating the "spirit" of the Old Man of the Mountain. GFWC-NH is represented on the Old Man of the Mountain Legacy Fund Committee and has proven its dedication to the state of New Hampshire once again. GFWC-NH hosted the 2004 and 2005 Profile Awards Program and has been invited to host the May 3, 2006 event at the Capitol Center of the Arts in Concord.

Planned activities (to date) of the GFWC-NH President's Project include:

  • Sale of Old Man of the Mountain night lights.
  • Sale of other items (Old Man of the Mountain CDs and books).
  • Creative Writing Contest for 4th graders - "Treasured Memories of the Old Man of the Mountain"
(Download the information and guidelines in doc format or pdf format.)
  • Statewide canister collection spearheaded by school children.
  • Hosting of the May 3, 2006 Annual Profile Awards.

"Behind Every Old Man Is a Good Women's Club"...GFWC-NH clubwomen are once again reconnecting with the Legacy inherited from our volunteer sisters who went before...and are proud and pleased with what we can accomplish together ....for the betterment of NH's citizenry. After all he wasn't just an "old man" he was OUR Old Man...the symbol of the Granite State.
